Mozambique: Maputo Port Dredging Project Targets Maritime Competitiveness and Blue Economy Growth

Estimated at US$150 million, the Maputo Port dredging project is designed to accommodate larger vessels, improve port operating efficiency and strengthen Mozambique’s position within Southern Africa’s logistics corridors.

Mozambique has taken another step towards strengthening its port capacity with the launch, on 12 October, of deepening works on the access channel to the Port of Maputo. Chaired by President Daniel Francisco Chapo, the ceremony marked the commencement of a strategic investment aimed at improving the port’s operational capabilities and reinforcing the competitiveness of the national economy.

Beyond the works taking place beneath the water’s surface, the project carries significant economic implications. By increasing the port’s capacity to accommodate larger vessels and improving access conditions, the dredging operation is expected to enhance port efficiency, facilitate cargo movements and create new opportunities for economic activity.

A Channel Designed to Accommodate Larger Vessels

One of the project’s main objectives is to enable the Port of Maputo to accommodate larger vessels. Upon completion, the access channel will be able to receive vessels with drafts approaching 15 metres.

The project also includes a substantial widening of the channel. In straight sections, its width will increase from approximately 110 metres to 210 metres. In curved sections, it will expand from 150 metres to 295 metres.

These improvements are intended to strengthen the port’s operational capacity and enable it to respond more effectively to the requirements of larger-scale maritime transport. They form part of a long-term effort to maintain competitiveness as regional and international trade and logistics demands evolve.

Strengthening the Maputo Corridor and Facilitating Trade

Speaking at the launch ceremony, Minister of Transport and Logistics João Jorge Matlombe highlighted the importance of dredging in strengthening the Maputo Corridor.

Improved access to the port is expected to facilitate cargo handling and movement, reduce logistics costs and support exports. The broader objective is to consolidate Mozambique’s position as a leading trade and logistics platform in Southern Africa.

Strengthening port capacity is therefore central to improving the flow of goods and reinforcing the Port of Maputo’s integration into regional and international logistics networks.

A Strategic Investment for the Blue Economy

President Daniel Francisco Chapo emphasised the economic significance of port infrastructure, even when the work takes place beneath the water. According to the President, the project is expected to create the conditions needed to stimulate economic activity and generate new opportunities for citizens.

From this perspective, the Maputo Port dredging project forms part of the wider challenges and opportunities associated with the blue economy, particularly the role of maritime infrastructure in supporting trade and sea-related economic activities. Strengthening port capacity is a key element of the country’s efforts to improve its economic competitiveness.

The project represents an estimated investment of approximately US$150 million by Maputo Port Development Company (MPDC), the port’s concessionaire. It is linked to the extension of the port concession agreement until 2058.

The dredging works form part of a broader investment programme at the Port of Maputo worth more than US$2 billion. This programme is intended to prepare the infrastructure for the demands of larger-scale maritime transport and strengthen its competitiveness over the coming decades.

Maputo Port Prepares for the Logistics Challenges of the Future

By deepening and widening its access channel, the Port of Maputo aims to strengthen its operational capabilities and consolidate its role in regional and international trade.

The project’s significance extends beyond the modernisation of a port facility. It also concerns Mozambique’s ability to improve the efficiency of its logistics corridors, support exports and leverage its position in regional commerce.

By placing maritime capacity and logistics performance at the heart of this investment, the dredging project marks another step in the development of the Port of Maputo and supports Mozambique’s ambitions for economic competitiveness and blue economy development.
