On 12 August 2024, the President of the Republic of Mozambique, Filipe Jacinto Nyusi, launched the Blue Economy Development Strategy (EDEA), a document that forms part of his government’s efforts to provide Mozambicans with concise and clear strategic guidance aimed at promoting the rational and sustainable exploitation of aquatic resources.
With an ambitious vision, according to Filipe Jacinto Nyusi, the instrument presents an approach based on six fundamental pillars that summarise the areas to be transformed: fisheries and aquaculture; renewable energies and the marine extractive industry; natural capital, the environment and the circular economy; tourism and culture; maritime transport, port infrastructures and logistics; and maritime safety.
The document also includes the Blue Investment Opportunities Portfolio, which will help connect potential investors and beneficiaries, as well as provide a better understanding of where and how to invest in actions that fall within the framework of the blue economy in Mozambique.
With regard to this same instrument, the President of the Republic hopes that it will become a point of reference for all those interested in the marine and aquatic economy.
‘We want marine and aquatic resources not only to be exploited rationally, but also to be used to promote our development programme. We want to do this while respecting the biological biodiversity conservation agenda’, said President Nyusi, stressing that the holding of the conference to launch the document in question testifies to the government’s commitment to nature.
He therefore encouraged the various stakeholders and participants at the meeting to share and discuss, in an open and frank manner, the perspectives, measures and actions to be implemented to make the blue economy development strategy a reality.
The Blue Economy Development Strategy is an initiative of the Mozambican government, led by the Ministry of the Sea, Inland Waters and Fisheries, which aims to promote the sustainable use of ocean resources, improve the standard of living of coastal populations and protect the marine ecosystem.
The conference to launch this initiative is seen as an important step towards the sustainable economic development of the country, by exploiting the vast marine resources it has to offer.
