The Kenya Marine & Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI) Fisheries team, led by Assistant Director Dr. Gladys Okemwa, is attending an applied training and scoring session on selected priority fisheries using the EAF Implementation Management Tool (EAF IMT) at Sarova Whitesands Beach Resort & Spa in Mombasa, Kenya. This is a crucial step towards strengthening ecosystem-based fisheries management in the country.
The capacity-building session, led by Mr. Matthieu Bernardon of the EAF Nansen Programme and officially opened by Mr. Rashid Imam, Regional Coordinator of the State Department for the Blue Economy and Fisheries (SDBEF), brings together 33 fisheries practitioners. These participants represent the Beach Management Unit network, Coastal Counties, Pwani University, the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM), the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute, the Kenya Fisheries Service, and the State Department for the Blue Economy and Fisheries.
Participants are evaluating and scoring progress made in achieving 3 components of EAF: Ability to achieve (governance and management frameworks), Ecological well-being (fishery impacts on stocks, habitats and ecosystems) and Human well-being (fishery effects on livelihoods, food and nutrition security, health and safety, gender and equity) for 6 priority fisheries. The process will establish baselines for the prioritization of improvement action plans.
