Ghana to Develop Modern Fishing Infrastructure in Apam and Kpando-Torkor

The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development (MOFAD) of Ghana, in partnership with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries of Korea, has announced the selection of Apam and Kpando-Torkor for the first phase of a major fisheries infrastructure development project. This decision was reached during a meeting on November 27, 2024, at the Ministries Conference Room in Accra.

The project, which aims to enhance Ghana’s fisheries sector, follows a feasibility study conducted earlier this year by the Korean ministry and its technical partner, DY Engineering. The study, initiated in June 2024, assessed four potential locations—Abuesi, Apam, Ahwiam, and Kpando-Torkor—for the establishment of modern fishing landing sites and associated infrastructure.

The initiative is designed to strengthen international collaboration, bringing advanced technology and financial support to the development of Ghana’s fishing ports and broader fisheries industry. The selection of Apam and Kpando-Torkor reflects the findings of the feasibility study and the commitment to address local needs while fostering economic growth in the fisheries sector.

The project marks a significant milestone in Ghana’s efforts to modernize its fishing industry and improve the livelihoods of coastal and lakeside communities. Detailed plans and timelines for the construction of the facilities are expected to be announced in the coming months.
