TMT and Global Fishing Watch are hosting a webinar under the theme “Arming Fisheries Managers with Open Access Vessel Information and Insights to Eliminate Illegal, Unregulated, and Unreported (IUU) Fishing.” The event is scheduled for Friday, July 5th, from 4-5 PM (UTC+3).
IUU fishing remains a persistent global issue, costing the world economy over USD 20 billion annually. This detrimental practice undermines effective fisheries management, damages ocean ecosystems, and poses a significant threat to food security. Additionally, it is often linked to severe labor and human rights abuses, including modern slavery.
To address these challenges, TMT and Global Fishing Watch have developed Vessel Viewer, a free and open-access tool that provides comprehensive vessel history and insights. This innovative tool integrates vessel registry information, satellite data, and advanced analysis, allowing users with internet access to search and access identity and activity information for over 65,000 commercial fishing vessels, including those without automatic identification systems (AIS).
The upcoming webinar will introduce the core features and applications of Vessel Viewer. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from fisheries managers from Ghana, Kenya, and the Joint Analytical Cell, who will share their experiences using Vessel Viewer to enhance fisheries port controls and support critical monitoring, control, and surveillance (MCS) operations aimed at eliminating IUU fishing.
