DP World inaugurates its new headquarters at the Multi-Purpose Terminal of the Port of Luanda in Angola and announces a $90 million investment

DP World inaugurated its new headquarters at the Multipurpose Terminal of the Port of Luanda on 29 September. The facility is designed to improve working conditions for the company’s employees. On the occasion, the company announced an additional investment of USD 90 million to expand and modernise the terminal.

The ceremony was presided over by Adílson Gabriel Alves Catala, Secretary of State for Civil Aviation, Maritime and Port Sectors, representing the Minister of Transport, Ricardo D’Abreu. Also in attendance were Alberto Bengue, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Port of Luanda, and DP World executives from Angola and across Africa.

The building features administrative offices, a clinic, a canteen and rest areas. It is also equipped with more than 300 solar panels to support its electricity supply.

During the ceremony, Francisco Pinzón, CEO of DP World Angola, announced this new phase of investment. He emphasised that the extension of the concession by a further ten years, until 2051, demonstrates the company’s long-term commitment to Angola. He also noted that the investments are expected to improve service efficiency and support the country’s ambition to establish itself as a continental logistics hub.

According to information published on DP World’s official website on 6 October, the investment will be implemented over a two-year period. The expansion will increase the concession area from 27 to 37 hectares, extend the quay from 610 to 830 metres, and raise the terminal’s projected capacity from 500,000 to 1.2 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units).

The plan includes the acquisition of three quay cranes and 12 semi-automated rubber-tyred yard gantry cranes. The company expects these improvements to enable the terminal to handle two Post-Panamax vessels simultaneously and reduce vessel turnaround time at the terminal by up to 50%.

Mohammed Akoojee, DP World’s head for Africa, said the ability to accommodate larger vessels could support the development of new maritime connections and strengthen Luanda’s role as a gateway to West and Central African markets.

Alberto Bengue, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Port of Luanda, said the inauguration fulfils one of the obligations under the concession agreement and improves working conditions. He also highlighted that the new equipment and technological systems are expected to increase productivity, reduce congestion at the quay and container yard, and facilitate the movement of containers and trucks into and out of the terminal.

DP World is a multinational logistics and port terminal management company headquartered in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It has operated the Multipurpose Terminal of the Port of Luanda since 2021, marking five years of activity focused on modernising infrastructure and improving port operations.
